Legendary Scribe Tom King To Tackle Superhero PTSD In New Mystery Project For DC…

Sensational scribe – Tom King has revealed at the recent DC In DC convention that he will be spearheading a new mystery project titled Sanctuary, that aims to explore the long term pyschological effects that are wrought upon the minds of those brave few who choose to pursue a career in costumed crime-fighting.

Of course, few writers are able to match King’s literary grasp upon the psychosomatic effects of fighting crime. He has proven his erudite skills of profundity in his most recent projects for DC with the bombastic ongoing Batman Rebirth monthly and the (quite frankly) groundbreaking Mister Miracle 12 issue maxi-series.

During a panel discussion about PTSD in comics and comic-book writing King said –

“The DCU has a bunch of Superheroes and all they do is fight, all the time, and that must have a psychological effect on them, right? You can’t live a life of violence and not feel that violence in your heart. We also have a group of heroes, the Trinity (Bats, Wondy, Supes) who care about these other heroes. They sort of feel like parental figures, the foundations that stand beneath them. And they care about them for two reasons – one, because they’re good people, but also, two, if Superheroes experience trauma and it drives them mad, that’s a real danger. So they have set up something called Sanctuary, a place, modelled on veterans’ crisis centres where you can go and discuss the inherent trauma involved with crime-fighting, where Wonder Woman, Batman and Superman can endeavour to help you”

Sounds intriguing, and with the venerable Tom King at the helm there is an absolute certainty that this will be yet another legendary project for DC.

Shazam Movie Reveals New Villain And Release Date…

DC’s incoming movie based upon the popular Billy Batson alter ego – Shazam, will debut on the silver screen in April of 2019. In recently uncovered casting call notes for the Wizard Shazam (the mystical character who grants Batson his magical powers) we also discover casting cues for the entire Sivana family, including, of course, that of Billy’s arch-enemy, the villainous Dr Sivana.

And with that said, as of the time of writing this article, fantastic British thespian Mark Strong has just been cast as the eponymous villain. Strong is no stranger to playing miscreants (well he is British after all, we’re really good at the ol’ evil bad guy stuff apparently) he was the antagonist in the original Kick Ass movie, and lest we forget he has also portrayed another classic DC villain, Sinestro, in the much maligned (but hey, we liked it!) Ryan Reynold’s Green Lantern movie.

Shazam is currently in production directed by David F. Sandberg, and stars Zachary Levi as its titular star, alongside Asher Angel as his 12 year old alter ego Billy Batson… plus the possibility (please, please) of Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson as Shazam’s longtime super powered rival, Black Adam.

12 Years A Slave Writer Is Penning A Series For DC That Explores The DC Universe Through The Eyes of It’s Marginalised Characters.

Oscar winning writer – John Ridley has been tasked with writing a series that explores the intimate and mostly concealed stories behind the DC Universes’ many characters who don’t represent the overused comic book staple of white, straight, male protagonists, with a mini-series titled – The Other History Of The DC Universe.

The series itself will feature many of DC’s famous Superheroes of colour including the likes of Japanese anti-hero – Katana, African-American Green Lantern – John Stewart and black female Superhero – Vixen. The Other History Of The DC Universe aims to examine the “sociopolitical perspective of heroes who come from traditionally disenfranchised groups, at it’s core, the series will focus on the lives behind the costumes and their endeavours to overcome real world issues, The Other History Of The DC Universe isn’t about saving the world, it’s about having the strength to be who you are”

Of course there are plenty of classic costumed crimefighters that Ridley could potentially call upon for this project, as DC have a rather diverse roll call of characters throughout their history. I for one hope to see one of my personal favourite characters Kate Kane, one of the first overtly popular lesbian  Superheroes – Batwoman, making an appearance at some point during the run.

A Brooding Robin Captured On Camera…

robin (1).jpg

Actor Brenton Thwaites Inherits The Live Action Mantle Of Robin… Brilliantly!

“Holy live action awesomeness, Batman!”  DC Comics and Warner Bros have finally revealed our first look at upcoming Titans actor Brenton Thwaites as iconic comic-book sidekick Robin, and it’s, quite frankly… fantastic!

The shadowy, brooding side shot of the Boy Wonder encapsulates perfectly the classic comic-book character, and even though it’s not a full body shot, the design clearly follows Robin’s signature look, from the red and green hued costume, to the recognisable “R” symbol on the left breast. The costume design is by industry veteran Laura Shannon, who has previously worked on Iron Man and DC’s incoming live action version of Black Lightning.

The Titans live action series is due to debut next year on DC’s upcoming digital streaming service.

Batman + Medieval Japan = Too Much Bloody Awesomeness For Mere Mortals (In Fact, I Think My Head May Just Explode From The Excitement Of It All)…

manga bats

This, this is freakin’ amazing!… as if Gotham’s grim guardian, The Batman, isn’t already the coolest Superhero ever conceived, DC Comics and Warner Bros animation only go and throw him (plus his nearest and dearest foes, and allies) back in time to medieval Japan, where they become entangled in a provincial power struggle.

The film is directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, who expressed that the film is definitely more of  reflection on how Japan sees Batman, as opposed to how Batman perceives Japan. Indulge in the sublime trailer included below fellow Batfans! (and do try not to let your head explode from the exhilaration, it really can cause quite a mess!)

The Triumphant Return Of Booster Gold Is Nigh (Finally!)…

bg (1)

The bombastic and much beloved Booster Gold will be returning to the DC Universe in Action Comics #993, courtesy of his original creator Dan Jurgens. Cult character Booster has been conspicuous by his absence for quite a while now, and his multiple fans have clamoured for his rapturous return.

Booster (real name – Michael Jon Carter) the self promoting, glory seeking, time travelling hero from the future first appeared in February 1986, created by writer/artist Dan Jurgens. Using his knowledge from future events and advanced technology he became a self styled Superhero with a love for fame and fortune.

Though initially a swaggering and attention seeking showboat, Booster over the course of time, via interactions with other costumed heroes and through personal tragedies finally became the candid and unwavering Superhero he always dreamed of becoming, though ultimately weighed downed by the false pretence of the previous reputation he created for himself. Oh, and he’s also one half of the greatest comedic comic-book duo of all time Blue and Gold (along with his ol’ pal Blue Beetle – Ted Kord)

Blue Beetle And Booster Gold – The Greatest Comic Duo Of… All… Time!!

Booster will return from the future once more in the two part tale “Booster Shot” in issues #933 and 934 of Action Comics ( we need a Blue and Gold movie… right now DC… right goddamn now!)

Lara Croft Triumphantly Returns To The Silver Screen In First Trailer For Her New Movie…

tr13.jpg

Quintessentially English archaeologist and raider of tombs, Lara Croft will triumphantly return to the big screen in 2018, with Swedish actress Alicia Vikander portraying the much loved iconic video-game heroine. It has actually been an astonishing fourteen years since the much beloved character was last seen in a live action role, as depicted by Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider: Cradle Of Life, so let’s be honest, a new movie following our favourite globetrotting, relic hunting bad-ass superheroine is looooong overdue!

We are huge fans of the lovely Lara here in the Precinct and have been ever since we got our hands on her original video-game outing way back in 1996 on our my highly missed Sega Saturn. The original game by British developers Eidos Interactive revolved around the exploits of super archaelogist and adventurer Ms Croft and tasked the player with guiding the titular heroine through various tombs and ruins searching for long lost mythological artifacts whilst avoiding death traps, wild animals and solving puzzles.

tr2013

The new film is based upon the 2013 reboot and is looking really rather wonderful, one of the things we were worried about was whether or not Alicia would be able to nail Lara’s extremely British accent, but judging by the first trailer for the film, it’s sounding pretty damn good (being English myself, I approve!) Revel in the first trailer for the film (below), and then lament that we have to wait until March 2018 to see it:

Shazam Movie To Start Pre-Production Early 2018

sh.jpg

“SHAZAM!!”  *looks at self, realises nothing has happened* “dammit, it doesn’t seem to work for mere mortals such as myself (sigh)…” you see whenever classic DC character Billy Batson utters the magical phrase ‘Shazam’ he turns into the iconic and mystical superhero… uh… Shazam! (formerly known as Captain Marvel)

Shazam’s first appearance was in Whiz Comics #2 in 1940, and revolved around the adventures of 12 year old Billy Batson, who upon speaking the magic word of the six immortal elders: Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury transformed into the adult Superhero with powers that include, flight, super strength, super speed, magical lightning and spell casting. The long awaited movie adaptation has been waiting in the wings for what seems like forever, but news has emerged that principal photography will begin early next year. Apart from that little else is known about the project including casting details… more as we hear it fellow fans of fantastic fiction.

HBO Confirms Watchmen TV Pilot Episode…

wm.jpg

Yes, yes, yes… YES! I love Watchmen, it is without a shadow of a doubt my absolute favourite comic book series of all time, the Zack Snyder directed 2009 movie adaptation was a masterpiece, and now it seems we are going to be getting an episodic TV series based upon the masterful 80’s series, and by HBO no less… so quality is mostly assured!

The Cable network company has officially ordered the pilot and also commissioned extra scripts from screenwriter and producer Damon Lindeloff (Lost, Star Trek) for his take on Alan Moore’s iconic series. Lindeloff is a huge fan of both the original source material and Zack Snyder’s own take, and mentioned in a recent interview with Hollywood Reporter that – “The original comic series continues to influence my work, from the flashbacks to the non linear storytelling, to the deeply flawed characters, these are elements I try to put into everything I write”  Soooooo exciting, I literally cannot wait for Rorschach’s rambunctious return!

Batgirl Movie Swings Into Production In 2018…

bg (1) - Edited.jpg

Finally stepping out of the shadow of her mentor, Warner Bros has confirmed at this years San Diego Comic Con that fan favourite director Joss Whedon will start production on the Batgirl movie in 2018.

As I write this my hands are trembling slightly at the thought of one of my very favourite comic book icons being unleashed unto the silver screen for her very first solo escapade, triumphantly following in the footsteps of the recent smash hit Wonder Woman movie… and directed by Joss Whedon no less!

bg1 (1)

Babs Gordon has been prowling the mean streets of Gotham City since 1967, and since that time has become one of the most prominent and well loved female Superheroes, a resolute, highly intelligent character that can easily match wits with her mentor, The Batman. Though a core member of the titular “Bat-Family” Babs doesn’t share Bruce’s angst ridden, morose ideals, but is very much her own person, a brighter more optimistic member of the sullen crime-fighting team, who actually relishes her alter ego, and also enjoys a lifestyle outside of the cape and cowl. Babs is less scowling pessimist and more sassy optimist, with a penchant for quips and selfies in the heat of her frequent justice seeking ventures.

Here’s hoping Joss Whedon can do the character proud, and Babs can hit the giddy heights set by this years stunning Wonder Woman flick.

New Justice League Trailer Steals The Show At San Diego Comic-Con…

You want more live action Wonder Woman? well you’ve got it, along with the substantial added bonus of Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, and Aquaman… that’s right the new Justice League trailer was revealed at SDCC today and it’s AWESOME! Showcasing not just the World’s Greatest Superheroes, but also big bad, Steppenwolf. Prepare for minds to be blown…

Black Lightning Strikes At SDCC…

The CW have dropped the first trailer for their new upcoming Superhero saga – Black Lightning. Starring Cress Williams, Black Lightning was one of DC’s first African/American Superheroes. Jefferson Pierce’s initial debut in the DC Universe was in 1977, his powerful electricity based powers have helped him secure a place amongst some of DC’s finest Meta-Human teams including the Justice League, and the Batman created Outsiders. Who Watches The Watchmen?

w - Edited.jpg

HBO are, once again, hinting that they are attempting to bring Alan Moore’s seminal comic book series ‘Watchmen’ to the small screen. The groundbreaking 80’s series published by DC Comics is one of the greatest pieces of Superhero fiction ever wrought, and was previously brought to life through Zack Snyder’s masterful 2009 cinematic adaptation.

HBO have approached Damon Lindelof, the creator of shows such as ‘Lost’ and ‘The Leftovers’ to take the reins of the series. Lindelof told Comic Book Resources in 2009 that Watchmen had “influenced his writing style more than anything else he had ever read”, so he seems like an excellent choice for reuniting us with it’s iconic cast of misfit Superheroes and masked vigilantes.

Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm Returns In All New HD Remaster…

Batman-Mask-of-the-Phantasm-wallpaper.jpg

Well finally… the stunning 1993 animated movie ‘Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm’ will release on Blu-Ray next month in an all new 1080p high definition remaster.  Warner Bros 90’s classic is a favourite amongst Bat-fans, and for good reason, it’s one of the best interpretations of Gotham’s guardian outside of the comic books themselves. The film successfully drives home the pain and sacrifice that Bruce Wayne has had to endure to become the justice seeking creature of the night that haunts the dreams of Gotham’s many miscreants and malefactors.

‘When the city’s most feared gangsters are systematically eliminated, the Caped Crusader is initially blamed. But prowling the Gotham night is a shadowy new villain – The Phantasm, a sinister figure with links to Batman’s past. Can the Dark Knight elude the Police, capture the Phantasm, and clear his own name?’

Judge Dredd Will Soon Be Passing Judgement, In Your Living Room!..

jd1.jpg

That’s right fellow Squaxx Dek Thargo, Ol’ stoney face himself – Judge Dredd will soon be invading your living rooms in the recently announced ‘Mega City One’ TV series!

The British comic book icon is set to star in his very own series thanks to 2000 AD owners Rebellion teaming up with IM Global. Rebellion have announced that development of the series is currently underway, and the cast will be unveiled soon. The series will be filmed in the UK and overseen by Rebellion themselves, which makes us supremely confident that it will remain ever faithful to the popular character.

mc1

Rebellion owners, Chris and Jason Kingsley said: “We are very excited to be beginning the journey of getting Dredd’s Mega-City One on the television screen, thanks to the legion of fans who have kept up pressure on social media. We aim to make a big budget production that will please our fans and the general screen watching public alike.”

Doomsday Approaches The DC Universe…

Doomsday

Who or what is behind the reality shifting events of 2016’s biggest selling comic DC Rebirth? superstar scribe and DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns will reveal all when the mini-series ‘Doomsday Clock’ launches later this year.

“It’s Watchmen colliding with the DC Universe” Johns told SyfyWire, “It is the most personal and epic, most utterly mind-bending project I have worked on in my career.”

dc

At the beginning of the year Geoff Johns revealed his return to comic book writing by releasing a teaser image of Dr Manhattan on his Twitter stream, and his upcoming Doomsday Clock mini-series will ultimately reveal the intention behind Doc’s machinations, and their massive ramifications for the DC Universe, oh and Superman and Doc will clash in epic fashion!!

Alongside offering answers for Rebirth, the mini-series will also explore the the core nature of humanity that differentiates Superman and Dr Manhattan as characters (aside from them punching the hell out of each other, of course!)

Doomsday Clock releases this November…

That’s right, Gal Gadot’s starring role as the original and most influential female comic-book character of all time approaches, and we are feverish with anticipation!! Warner Bros have released two new trailers showcasing the upcoming legendary film, and by ‘The Horns Of The Mighty Minotaur’ they look fantastic, bathe in their awesomeness my friends…

Teen Titans Live Action Is A GO!…

That’s right, fellow fans of fantastic fiction, the long awaited live action TV series of DC’s premier teen Superheroes and sizzling sidekicks is finally on it’s way! Not only that, but it will be headlining DC’s new digital streaming service alongside season three of ‘Young Justice’. There were plans for TNT to originally produce a show based upon the tremendous team of teens, but this was scrapped, most likely in favour of this new show, which is being produced by superstar comic scribe Geoff Johns, and DC/CW engineer Greg Berlanti. The press release also mentions a few of the team’s line up, which will include – Nightwing, Starfire (yes, yes, YESSSS!!) and Raven. We shall bring you more news on this as we hear it.

Batman Family Set To Infiltrate Cinemas In 2019…

b1.jpg

There’s an ancient Chinese proverb that says “You can never have too much Batman” and thankfully, in 2019, that wise old axiom will be coming true as we will be besieged by a veritable swarm of Bat awesomeness. According to my Gotham City sources, Warner Bros intend to make 2019 the year of the Bat by releasing not one, or two, but an astonishing SIX Batman related movies!

That’s right fellow Batfans, six movies centered around everyone’s favourite costumed crimefighting compatriots. Apparently the plan is to release the Margot Robbie led “Gotham City Sirens” on or around Valentines Day, the highly anticipated “Nightwing” movie in May, Babs Gordon’s solo escapades in “Batgirl” in August, and finishing their DCEU Bat-run with “The Batman” in September. There will also be two animated movies, that will include an adaptation of the classic Long Halloween. All this Bat goodness will be part of DC and WB’s celebration of 80 years of Batman, roll on 2019, for it truly shall be… The Year Of The Bat.

Deathstroke… Superhero!?

ds.jpg

Deathstroke is one of DC’s most popular and enduring bad guys, the Teen Titan’s nemesis has been with us since his inception in 1980 by comic book gods, mighty Marv Wolfman and glorious George Perez. Throughout his auspicious career as one of comic’s most prolific fan favourites he has been cast as both a murderous mercenary SuperVillain, and a violent anti-hero… but from Deathstroke #21, Slade Wilson will be going full Superhero ahead after being thrust into the Speedforce (by a Flash, which one is yet to be revealed) and emerging… a hero!?

“A new day has dawned for Deathstroke. Having emerged from the Speedforce a changed man, Slade Wilson takes aim at living a better life, a life in the sevice of justice. But when the world refuses to accept a new Deathstroke, Slade recruits a group of young Superheroes to join him including former Teen Titans, Kid Flash and Power Girl, his children Rose and Jericho, and the awesome Terra. But has Slade truly shed his villainous past? And what other shadowy forces are working against him?”

Well if Marvel can make Captain America evil (apparently he’s a bad guy, always has been) then DC can make Slade a good guy… right!?

It’s Dark, And It Matters…

dm3.jpg

DC Comics have disclosed that five new titles will be emerging from their newly announced “Dark Matter” line. The comic series’ will be barrelling out from the previously announced “Dark Knights: Metal”, the Batman-centric major event series that will encompass the entire DC Universe line this summer.

The five new ongoing comic series will consist of – “New Challengers” by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert, “Damage” by Tony Daniel and Robert Venditti, “Immortal Men” by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee, “Sideways” by Dan Didio, Kenneth Rocafort and Justin Jordan, and finally, “The Silencer” by Dan Abnett and John Romita Jr.

dm1.jpg

These are seriously dream teams of the highest creative echelons, which bodes exceptionally well for the newly announced titles. DC Comics’ Co-Publisher and superstar artist Jim Lee commented on the new line with:

“Dark Matter is a return to bringing both the writer and the artist to the fore, to unlock their true potential. At the talent summit we discussed what was currently missing in comics and how we could create something new for this generation. The result was Dark Matter, you’ll see bombastic action scenes and a narrative driven by the artist. This approach has energised the creators involved, myself included, and we’re going to have a lot of fun with these books!”

Big Trouble Is Heading To Your Tabletop…

btilc

We are huge fans of director John Carpenter here in the Precinct, which will be obvious to most considering the name of our website is a riff on one of his greatest movies. After Halloween and The Thing our third favourite Carpenter classic is the fantastically funny “Big Trouble In Little China”  the Kurt Russell starring martial arts/comedy combo is an absolute gem of a film, and now you can recreate the quintessential classic at home thanks to a new board game based upon the cult movie.

The game itself is currently still in development, but designers Chris Batarlis and Boris Polonsky have revealed the workings of the game itself and images of the fantastically recreated board and pieces, which look remarkably like their cinematic counterparts.

bt

The Board Recreates Scenes From The Classic Movie In Fantastic Detail

“It’s a thematic, co-operative, strategy, miniatures adventure game that allows 1-4 players to experience the events they remember from the film as well as create new adventures of their own. The game plays in two acts – Act One uses the front side of the game board: Chinatown, whilst Act Two takes place on the back: Lo Pan’s Lair”

Batgirl Joins DCEU Courtesy Of Joss Whedon…

That’s right Bat-fans, everyone’s second favourite bat eared, cape wearing vigilante, Batgirl will be starring in her very own movie… directed by Joss Whedon no less! It has been confirmed by entertainment magazine, Variety, that Babs Gordon’s red haired costumed crime-fighter will follow Wonder Woman into the annals of female led Superhero movies… great news indeed, the diversity will surely help balance out the overabundance of male driven comic-book films and pave the way for more classic female heroes and villains (Come on Batwoman!!)

Variety also confirmed that the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Avengers director is currently in talks with Warner Bros to write and direct the comic-book spin off, which should help the prospective film to gain traction amongst fans and critics alike… exciting news indeed.

Black Lightning Strikes: First Look At Cress Williams In Costume…

bl.jpg

Our first glimpse at actor Cress Williams in the iconic Black Lightning costume was revealed this week, the upcoming CW show is being produced by Greg Berlanti and is currently still in production.

Black Lightning (real name Jefferson Pierce) was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, and made his debut appearance in ‘Black Lightning #1′ in April 1977. Jefferson is one of the first major African-American Superheroes to appear in comics, he has been an on/off member of the Justice League and a regular in the Batman created team ‘The Outsiders’. Jefferson’s power set includes – the generation and manipulation of electricity, flight, and the ability to conjure force fields.

A Wonder Girl Is Born…

ww gg

Many congratulations to Gal Gadot on the birth of her very own Wonder Girl!

The actress who is the new face of DC’s revolutionary Superhero, Wonder Woman, welcomed into the world a baby girl on Monday 20 March. The baby has been named Maya (what a missed opportunity to call her Donna Troy… oh well) and is healthy and happy. The birth comes just two months shy of Gal’s solo venture as Wonder Woman, which is set to release worldwide in June.

gg

Gal wrote on her Instagram site “And then there were four… she is here, I feel so completely blessed and thankful for all the wonders in my life”  Gal and husband Yaron Versano are also the parents of a five year old daughter named Alma.

Dark Days Ahead For The Batman…

dd tf.jpg

Since the 2011 crossover series “Flashpoint” DC haven’t ventured back into the franchise spanning event series that the company has become synonymous for since the very first “Crisis” storyline way back in the early 60’s. That’s all set to change this summer though as DC gear up for their next big event, Dark Days. DC Comics have announced the superstar team up of Scott Snyder, Jim Lee, Andy Kubert, John Romita Jr, and James Tynion IV for an initial two issue prologue beginning in June with – Dark Days: The Forge, closely followed in July by – Dark Days: The Casting.

dd1

The mini-series prelude promises to “reveal the dark underbelly of the DC Universe” before it heads into a new franchise wide serial event. Not a great deal more is known at this time, but it does appear as though it will be a Batman-centric arc that may, just, tie in with the recent Rebirth/Watchmen integration. We shall endeavour to keep you updated, fellow DC fanatics.

Gal Pays Homage To Lynda In New WW Promo Image…

lcgg.jpg

An intriguing series of promotional images of Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman that have been appearing on cans of Dr Pepper showcase new pictures of Diana Prince ready for battle in the highly anticipated June released movie. One in particular though appears to be a fond tribute to Lynda Carter’s 1970’s version of the Themysciran Titan. The quintessential ‘hands on hips’ Superhero pose was a favourite of Lynda in the classic show, and Gal’s version is equally as cool.

Happy 40th Birthday Judge Dredd…

dredd.jpg

Not only did the Galaxy’s Greatest Comic – 2000AD reach it’s 40th anniversary milestone this year, but this month also brings us four decades of ol’ stony face himself, grim lawman of the future, the inimitable Judge Dredd. That’s right fellow fans of fantastic fiction, the UK’s biggest ever comic book star has been busting perps and incarcerating crooks for a fantastic forty years!

Dredd made his first appearance in prog #2 of 2000AD in March 1977, created by John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra, and became an instant hit with UK comic book fans, finally we had a character who could stand toe to toe with his American peers. Like many stories emanating from 2000AD, Dredd was an extreme satire of British culture and politics, often taking these themes to ridiculous extremes (though possibly not so extreme, considering the unfortunate direction that the UK has taken in the past year)

Dredd is the most infamous of the Judges who patrol the future city of Mega City One, riding his Lawmaster motorcycle through it’s mean streets and conferring justice utilising his Lawgiver sidearm. Judges literally are the law… judge, jury and executioner, dispensing justice as they see fit with complete autonomy, save their Book of Law. Dredd is one of the (very) few characters to have become successful outside of the British isles, and has always served as a harsh parody of how the world could end up lest it reins in it’s inherent fears and prejudices. Happy Birthday Joe, here’s to another 40!

Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Hailed As “Greatest Game Of All Time!”

z1.jpg

Nintendo’s new hybrid console “The Switch” is now amongst us (well, at least the lucky few who pre-ordered the device, such is the way with new Nintendo machines… unfortunately!) and with their new machine comes a brand new entry in their (arguably) most popular series… Zelda, and the gaming media is going crazy for it!

Currently sitting with an astonishing ’98’ overall rating on Metacritic, it seems the professional game reviewers can’t get enough of Ninty’s magnum opus… with even the notorious, critically harsh gaming magazine, Edge giving it an incredible ‘100’ rating, that’s right… Edge!!

z2.jpg

The Legend Of Zelda is an action RPG originally released on the Nintendo Famicom in 1986, designed by Shigeru Miyamoto and Takashi Tezuka. The series protagonist is a small elven boy named Link, who, at the start of virtually every game would be roused from slumber and tasked with saving Princess Zelda and the kingdom of Hyrule, from the evil shenanigans of chief antagonist, Ganon.

What makes Breath Of The Wild so different from it’s forebears though, is it’s abandoning of specific gaming tropes from previous iterations, the impressively vast world is entirely open to you from almost the get go, no slingshots, boomerangs or bombs holding you back from unlocking new areas, like earlier incarnations of the game. The physics are astounding, the graphics are gorgeous, with a rousing soundtrack and an infinite things to do, maybe this is the greatest game of all time.

Nintendo Switch Release Date And Launch Games Announced…

ns-edited

You know, I have always been more of an Xbox than a Nintendo (and previous to Microsoft’s beast of a console, I was a SEGA… in fact I still am.) But the one thing I have always loved (and bought) were Nintendo’s handhelds. I have owned virtually every portable device they have launched since the classic Gameboy in 1989, which is why I am genuinely excited for the Switch, Nintendo’s first hybrid console.

The Nintendo Switch is the incoming flagship console from the legendary Japanese gaming giant, which effortlessly combines home and portable play into one very cool package, and I want one… right now! Set to be released worldwide on March 3, 2017 at a very reasonable £279.99 ($299.99) with a strong launch line up that includes – Zelda: Breath Of The Wild, Dragon Quest XI, and Skyrim (that’s right folks, a portable version of Bethesda’s classic RPG… there goes my life.)

Geoff Johns And Dr Manhattan – Dream Team…

drM - Edited.jpg

DC Entertainment’s President and comic book author extraordinaire Geoff Johns is returning to writing comics again this year, and has (heavily) hinted that he may be exploring the intriguing connection between Watchmen and the DC Universe. In a series of tweets Johns has confirmed his return to his oeuvre, with an accompanying image of Watchmen’s Dr Manhattan. Johns’ last comic authorship was last May’s “DC Universe Rebirth #1” in which he eluded that the electric blue super-human may have had a hand in creating the rebooted Rebirth timeline.

The highly enjoyable one-shot also portrayed Batman discovering the iconic blood spattered smiley badge from Alan Moore’s groundbreaking 80’s mini-series, in the Bat Cave! Hold on tight dear readers, for this promises to be one hell of a wild ride!

Constantine Set To Return, In Animated Form…

cons-edited

Everyone’s favourite chain smoking, mystical, demon fighting anti-hero – John Constantine is set to return to the small screen in a new CW animated series. Following on from his fantastic (yet criminally short lived) NBC live action show, the new animation will find Constantine actor Matt Ryan reprising his role in voice over form and is being produced by Greg Berlanti. We were honestly hoping for another live action depiction of the magical man of mystery, but I guess an animated rendering is better than no return at all, plus CW’s animated Vixen series has been rather wonderful, so all the signs point to this being equally as great.

Precinct1313’s End Of The Year Geekstravaganza…

1313 r - Edited.jpg

2016, oh how we lament thee… ’tis been a rollercoaster of a year it has to be said, the world outside of the Precinct’s impenetrably darkened walls has seen many moments of both grief and utterly incredulous disbelief (as an example of this, being a Brit, I am still astonished that the larger populace of my home actually voted for Brexit!?) Some well loved and talented individuals passed away, and the political climate across the globe has shifted in a rather uncomfortable direction. Now more than ever we really need our alternate realities to hide in, be that comic books, movies or video-games and for this at least, 2016 was a great year.

2016, for me, was the year that I had been waiting for since I was six years old… as my beloved DC Superheroes finally burst forth from their comic book shackles, and onto the silver screen. Sure we’ve had plenty of movies throughout the decades that have brought us DC’s big two… Batman and Superman, and quite a few of them have been amazing, but the scale that DC have thrown their much loved characters onto the big screen this year has been literally stratospheric.

These Were Our Favourite Moments From 2016:

Bats and Supes Had A Disagreement…

bvs-edited

Batsy and Supes Threw Down At The Beginning Of 2016… And It Was Epic!!

The Year began with a disagreement between The Dark Knight and The Man Of Steel. In March the world’s two biggest Superheroes clashed head on in Warner Bros and Zack Snyder’s epic ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ and it was awe inspiring. Forget what the critics said, the film is a deep and psychological look at how the world would react to Super-humans amongst them, but for all it’s depth, it was also an outstandingly awesome action movie with stand-out turns from Ben Affleck as Batman, and the unforgettable big screen debut of the Themysciran TitanWonder Woman, a role actress Gal Gadot seemed born to play.

Suicide Squad Broke Their Bonds…

ssquad - Edited.jpg

“Smile For The Camera Mr J…”

In August Task Force X escaped from their well deserved incarceration in Belle Reve penitentiary to inflict all kinds of mayhem and mirth at the cinemas in David Ayer’s spectacularly fun take on DC’s ‘Suicide Squad’. John Ostrander’s classic comic book series about a group of Supervillains and disgraced Superheroes who are recruited by the Government for fully deniable black ops tasks in return for clemency was masterfully translated to the big screen by Ayer. With an eclectic cast of characters, an overtly powerful and enigmatic antagonist, and great performances from Jared Leto, Margot Robbie and Will Smith, this is an exemplary exercise in bringing a comic book series to vivid life (and Batman’s in it… and you can never have too much Batman!)

The Phantom Turned 80…

ph - Edited.jpg

2016 marked the astonishing 80th anniversary of Lee Falk’s genre defining Superhero ‘The Phantom’, it was The Ghost Who Walks who first donned a mask and colourful costume to fight an eternal and ceaseless battle against corruption and injustice with only his quick wits, martial skills and faithful companions; Devil his pet wolf and Ghost his trusty white steed. The Phenomenal Phantom was the progenitor of what later became a deluge of Superheroes and preceded peers Batman and Superman by a full two years.

Wondy Celebrated Her Anniversary…

wonder-woman-c-800-fb023

Oh How Time Flies, One Minute You’re Basking In the Golden Hues Of The Sun On The Resplendent Beaches Of Themyscira, Surrounded By Your Amazon Sisters, Then A Mere 75 Years Later You’ve Become A Superhero, Ambassador, Herald, God Of War, Feminist Paradigm, And Indomitable Icon To The Masses!

It’s been an awesome 75 years since Diana of Themyscira first burst onto the scene, wielding her golden lasso of truth and inspiring female empowerment and emancipation, Wonder Woman has proven to be the most important fictional female ever wrought. 2016 not only marked her 75th anniversary but also her big screen debut in Batman v Superman, and she was a huge highlight of that exceptional movie, and with her own solo movie set to appear at cinemas in mid 2017, there appears to be nothing stopping our immortal idol from ruling the roost for another seventy five…

The DC Universe Was Reborn…

dcr-edited

May 2016 marked a humongous relaunch of DC Comics’ entire line of monthly comic books aptly named ‘Rebirth’. It was primarily intended to return the DC Universe to a time prior to ‘Flashpoint’, a time paradox storyline that altered DC’s timeline and led into the 2011 ‘New 52’ reboot. The reboot itself was divisive amongst fans and some creators alike, and though initial sales were strong, the titles began to lapse in sales as fans yearned for their favourite heroes previous incarnations pre-52.

Wonder Woman Rebirth Has Been Astonishing, With Sublime Visuals Courtesy Of Liam Sharp And Nicola Scott

Rather than a reboot though, Rebirth was more of a soft relaunch retaining much of the history and happenings of the New 52 continuity, but returning characters back to their more popular personas prior to the paradox. And it’s been a hit! Rebirth has proven so popular that DC Comics for the first time in many a year has been soundly thrashing it’s closest rival Marvel in sales month in and out. Detective Comics, Wonder Woman, and Red Hood and the Outlaws have been stand out the best of these for this particular DC fanboy, but all titles have been fantastically written and engrossing, with both superstar veteran creators and upcoming stars scrabbling to join the DC Rebirth fold.

David Ayer Sends Out A Siren Call…

gcs-edited

Best be prepared folks, I may just get a tad bit over-excited on this one… just sayin’.

‘Gotham City Sirens!, Gotham City Sirens!!, Gotham City Sirens!!!, Gotham City Sirens!!!!, Gotham City Sirens!!!!!, Gotham Cit… Phew!’

OK, now that I’ve calmed down (a bit) let’s get straight to the epic news that DC Comics’ troublesome trio, Gotham City Sirens, have been announced as a major motion picture as part of the burgeoning DC Cinematic Universe. Suicide Squad director, David Ayer will be returning to helm the flick, and it will also mark the return of Margot Robbie as the Hellacious Harley Quinn.

gcs - Edited (1).jpg

Gotham City Sirens is one of our all time favourite comic book runs here in Precinct1313, the scintillating series was first published in 2009 and brought together three of Batman’s most famous female foes, feline felon – Catwoman, vined vixen – Poison Ivy, and of course mischievous misfit – Harley Quinn. The series lasted just two short years despite being a financial and critical success, to make way for DC’s ‘New52’ reboot. However, the Triumvirate of Temperamental Troublemakers have come together to cause mischief, mirth and misbehaviour several times since then, mostly in Harl’s own long running (and most excellent) comic book series.

gcs2-edited

Little else is currently known about the project, but Warner Bros have announced that the marvellous movie will be scripted by Geneva Dworet-Robertson, who is also currently writing the screenplay for another famous fictional female, Lara Croft, for the 2018 dated  ‘Tomb Raider’ reboot.

Exciting times ahead indeed, my fellow fans of fantastic fiction, what with next year’s Justice League movie and of course Wonder Woman’s solo film, let’s be honest it’s about time that more female led comic book movies were being developed, and DC have an infinite amount of Superheroines and Villainesses they can bring to the silver screen, we have our fingers crossed for Batwoman, Power Girl and The Huntress being next.

NES Mini Launches, And Instantly Sells Out…

Nintendo-NES-Mini-536143.jpg

In This Case N.E.S. Obviously Stands For ‘Non Existent Store-Wide!’

Nintendo’s classic grey box made a comeback this week with the release of the NES Classic Edition, a cute mini version of their hit 80’s home games console, replete with 30 built in games and a reproduction of the original controller… and instantly sold out worldwide!

Demand has been extremely high for the retro beast and Nintendo manufacturers are currently producing more as we write this post, though for some fans the wait might be too long, as the titchy console (which retails for £50 here in the UK) has been selling for ridiculous amounts on E-Bay, with people paying 4 to 5 times the RRP. Luckily us Precinct1313 dwellers are SEGA fans, and already have our mini Megadrive (known as the Genesis in the US) console… which actually comes with 80 games built in!

We Can ‘Harley’ Wait For Ms Quinn’s Solo Movie…

hQ - Edited.jpg

The Clown Princess of Crime, Harley Quinn, was a huge hit this year at the box office as an integral part of DC’s ridiculously fun Suicide Squad movie, in fact Margot Robbie’s performance was so highly rated that DC and Warner Bros almost instantly announced her own solo movie would be coming ‘at some point.’

hq.gif

“But Of Course I get My Own Movie, I Mean If It’s Good Enough For Wonder Woman, Right?”

Well technically not solo, as DC are lining up a veritable cadre of female comic book characters to star alongside the Mischievous Minx of Mayhem, as we reported some time back, possibly including such luminary legends as Batgirl, Black Canary and Poison Ivy. To help cement the fact that the movie will hopefully begin production soon, it’s been announced that scripting duties have been given to Christina Hodson. Hodson is known for her highly sought after screenplays that include soon to be filming, female led Sci-Fi actioner ‘The Eden Project’ and psychological thriller ‘Shut In’.

(Update: It’s now been confirmed by Suicide Squad director David Ayer that the scripting will be undertaken by Geneva Dworet-Robertson, and the movie will also star Catwoman and Poison Ivy, better known together as the ‘Gotham City Sirens’.)

Justice League Of America’s Full Line-Up Is An Eclectic Enigma…

jla1-edited

This Is The Greatest Line Up Of JLA Members Since The Keith Giffen Classic 1980’s Series Justice League International

Not since the halcyon heroes of the 1980’s JLI has a roster for the world’s greatest Super-Team been so… damn cool! Justice League International has always been my favourite version of DC Comics’ beloved team of MetaHumans.

I much preferred the quirky line up of characters, Blue Beetle (the Ted Kord variant, not the current version) and Booster Gold were standouts in the team… essentially they were lovable Superhero screw ups, C-list at best, to begin with, but advanced through those ranks to A listers in a very short amount of time indeed, thanks to great writing, fantastic character arcs, and an endearing slapstick style humour.

jli-1-edited

Justice League International, The Greatest line Up Of Leaguers Since… Forever!

The new JLA line up includes some classic heroes you expect to be included, such as The Batman and Black Canary, but then throws caution to the wind with lesser knowns like The Ray and former villain Killer Frost!  Definitely the most intriguing and exciting addition is ‘The Main Man’ himself, Lobo, back to his original arse-kicking alien bounty hunter self, after ditching the (rather terrible) New 52 version. Justice League of America Rebirth will be available in February 2017, brought to you by those ceaseless creators of cosmic comic book craft; Steve Orlando and Ivan Reis.
