Batman Family Set To Infiltrate Cinemas In 2019…
There’s an ancient Chinese proverb that says “You can never have too much Batman” and thankfully, in 2019, that wise old axiom will be coming true as we will be besieged by a veritable swarm of Bat awesomeness. According to my Gotham City sources, Warner Bros intend to make 2019 the year of the Bat by releasing not one, or two, but an astonishing SIX Batman related movies!
That’s right fellow Batfans, six movies centered around everyone’s favourite costumed crimefighting compatriots. Apparently the plan is to release the Margot Robbie led “Gotham City Sirens” on or around Valentines Day, the highly anticipated “Nightwing” movie in May, Babs Gordon’s solo escapades in “Batgirl” in August, and finishing their DCEU Bat-run with “The Batman” in September. There will also be two animated movies, that will include an adaptation of the classic Long Halloween. All this Bat goodness will be part of DC and WB’s celebration of 80 years of Batman, roll on 2019, for it truly shall be… The Year Of The Bat.
Deathstroke is one of DC’s most popular and enduring bad guys, the Teen Titan’s nemesis has been with us since his inception in 1980 by comic book gods, mighty Marv Wolfman and glorious George Perez. Throughout his auspicious career as one of comic’s most prolific fan favourites he has been cast as both a murderous mercenary SuperVillain, and a violent anti-hero… but from Deathstroke #21, Slade Wilson will be going full Superhero ahead after being thrust into the Speedforce (by a Flash, which one is yet to be revealed) and emerging… a hero!?
“A new day has dawned for Deathstroke. Having emerged from the Speedforce a changed man, Slade Wilson takes aim at living a better life, a life in the sevice of justice. But when the world refuses to accept a new Deathstroke, Slade recruits a group of young Superheroes to join him including former Teen Titans, Kid Flash and Power Girl, his children Rose and Jericho, and the awesome Terra. But has Slade truly shed his villainous past? And what other shadowy forces are working against him?”
Well if Marvel can make Captain America evil (apparently he’s a bad guy, always has been) then DC can make Slade a good guy… right!?
It’s Dark, And It Matters…
DC Comics have disclosed that five new titles will be emerging from their newly announced “Dark Matter” line. The comic series’ will be barrelling out from the previously announced “Dark Knights: Metal”, the Batman-centric major event series that will encompass the entire DC Universe line this summer.
The five new ongoing comic series will consist of – “New Challengers” by Scott Snyder and Andy Kubert, “Damage” by Tony Daniel and Robert Venditti, “Immortal Men” by James Tynion IV and Jim Lee, “Sideways” by Dan Didio, Kenneth Rocafort and Justin Jordan, and finally, “The Silencer” by Dan Abnett and John Romita Jr.
These are seriously dream teams of the highest creative echelons, which bodes exceptionally well for the newly announced titles. DC Comics’ Co-Publisher and superstar artist Jim Lee commented on the new line with:
“Dark Matter is a return to bringing both the writer and the artist to the fore, to unlock their true potential. At the talent summit we discussed what was currently missing in comics and how we could create something new for this generation. The result was Dark Matter, you’ll see bombastic action scenes and a narrative driven by the artist. This approach has energised the creators involved, myself included, and we’re going to have a lot of fun with these books!”

The original Dark Knight Returns saga by Frank Miller was a defining moment for The Batman, Miller’s alternate take on the much loved Superhero cast the character in an even more extreme grim, gritty and violent setting, with the caped crusader himself a dour and sullen character whose inner demons continually haunt him as the weight of age and a life of brutal violence takes its toll. We follow an ageing Bruce Wayne as he struggles with these psychological demons, and attempts to hold back his rage and inefficacy through alcohol addiction and suicidal abandon of his life through varying extreme motor sports.
Miller’s classic 80’s series, alongside classics – Watchmen and V For Vendetta, shook up an atrophying comic book industry and presented a much more adult and psychologically emotional depth to Superhero comics, defining the future of the industry in a monumental way.
Miller returned to his raison d’etre in the 2001 follow up mini series The Dark Knight Strikes Again, yet, unlike its groundbreaking predecessor, this was not favourably received by fans or critics alike (myself included) the book was little more than a parody of previous events, and Miller’s artwork had taken a severe downturn in quality.
Jump forward 14 years and Dark Knight III: The Master Race debuted, the newest chapter in the alternative Batverse, and it’s been… mostly OK, I guess, unfortunately the original series was such a phenomenon that any subsequent take has fared rather badly, unable to match the originals magnificence.
That said, there have been some defining moments (mainly visual) in this ongoing series that have certainly taken the breath away from this particular Batfan, and the gorgeous Bill Sienkiewicz variant cover is one of those marvellous moments. It evokes so beautifully a man haunted by his past, a broken figure who has ultimately accepted his failing to protect the city and people he loves, yet will fight on even though it will probably mean his own demise… this image, to me, defines The Batman irrevocably, and contains more emotional substance than both the second and third chapters of the Dark Knight trilogy put together.
DEATHSTROKE JOINS THE DC CINEMATIC UNIVERSE…
Finally… It’s the news all DC Comics’ fanatics have been waiting for, Slade Wilson better known by his alter ego ‘Deathstroke the Terminator’ has been revealed to be joining DC’s burgeoning cinematic universe after ‘The Batman’ himself, Ben Affleck shared a mysterious clip of the world’s most dangerous mercenary.
It is increasingly looking like he will be the main antagonist in Batman’s solo film, but in the footage he appears to walking through the cargo bay of the Flying Fox, the large aircraft which will be used as a mobile base of operations for the Justice League, so could we be getting a cameo appearance from the mercenary with the most in the currently filming Justice League flick? We certainly hope so. Check out the footage below fellow fans of fantastic fiction…
BLACK LIGHTNING WILL STRIKE THE SMALL SCREEN…
Film and television writer/director Greg Berlanti has confirmed that he is in the process of pitching a series based upon DC’s popular Superhero ‘Black Lightning’. Berlanti is the brains behind such televisual hits as Supergirl, Arrow, The Flash and Legends of Tomorrow.
Black Lightning, (real name Jefferson Pierce) was created by Tony Isabella and Trevor Von Eeden, and made his first appearance in ‘Black Lightning #1’ in April 1977. Jefferson is one of the first major African-American Superheroes to appear in comics, he has been an on/off member of The Justice League, and a regular in the Batman created team ‘The Outsiders’. Jefferson’s powers include – the generation and manipulation of electricity, flight, and the ability to conjure force fields. He is also a gold medal winning decathlete and master of various martial arts.
WONDER WOMAN TEAMS UP WITH BIONIC WOMAN FOR THE ULTIMATE 70’s NOSTALGIA FEST…
Iconic seventies TV superstars – Lynda Carter’s Wonder Woman and Lindsay Wagner’s Bionic Woman will return in a spectacular team up comic! The joint project between DC Comics and Dynamite Entertainment titled ‘Wonder Woman ’77 Meets The Bionic Woman’ see’s our sterling Superheroines collaborating to take down the sinister sect known as ‘CASTRA’.
DC Comics’ series ‘Wonder Woman ’77’ has been a fantastic homage to the original 70’s TV show, a fun and camp comic with astounding art that has superbly encapsulated the nostalgia and atmosphere of the original show. The idea of Diana Prince and Jamie Sommers teaming up is awesome, and we are very much looking forward to this historic collaboration, consider our breath very much bated!

This new close up of Ben Affleck as the Batman in upcoming movie-Batman vs Superman:Dawn of Justice was released at San Diego Comic-con on thursday as part of Batman day’s 75th anniversary celebrations. NUMBER 2 is: The Batman.
Batman-real name Bruce Wayne was created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, his first appearance was Detective comics#27 in May 1939. After his parents were brutally murdered in front of young Bruce’s eyes by Joe Chill, he swore an oath of vengeance against the criminals of his home..Gotham City. Spending his formative years training under the world’s greatest martial arts masters and learning other abilities such as ninjutsu and escapology, Bruce returned to Gotham to fight crime as the Batman.
Bruce was also born with a genius level intellect and was left a massive multi billion dollar fortune by his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne. Though he has no superpowers, Batman is quite possibly the most feared superhero in the DC universe…with the ability to seemingly appear and disappear at will, most criminals (and some superheroes) believe he is a supernatural creature of the night akin to a vampire. Using this reputation, his advanced skills and his ‘toys’, Batman with the help of other Gotham guardians (including Batgirl, Robin and Batwoman) manages to just about keep the streets of Gotham from overflowing in crime and supervillains.
Batman to date has the largest amount of appearances outside of comics than any other character, with movies and television shows dating back to the 1940’s. His popularity has never waned and he is as beloved today as when he was created seventy five years ago. This year is the year of the Bat, being his 75th anniversary and I am sure he will still be with us in another seventy five years!
As a side note, Batman was originally going to share the number one spot on this list, as we love this character so much and felt bad about putting him at number two. But as Christopher Lambert said in Highlander..’there can be only one!’, join us tomorrow friends to see who that is.
