Welcome, fellow fans of fantastic fiction, to another cool and compelling comic cover of the week, and this one is of extra special delight to me as it sees the return of my absolute favourite titanic twosome – the dynamically dysfunctional duo that is – Blue Beetle and Booster Gold!
Ted Kord and Michael Carter are, without a doubt, the superhero equivalent of Laurel and Hardy, brash and braggadocious unquestionably sum up Michael Carter aka Booster Gold, and his faithful companion in chaos, Ted Kord – the Blue Beetle. Though they enormously enjoy the gilded limelight as costumed crimefighters, and are absolutely more than happy to soak up any praise and glory that comes with that prestigious position, they are also well meaning and altruistic, but ultimately are, and always will be, lovable screw-ups!
Of course this always makes for fantastically fun adventures as the boys blunder their way through SuperVillain punch ups, alien invasions and rescuing the odd cat out of a tree, naturally they usually do these things really, really badly even if their intentions are pure (Beetle is more likely to get stuck in the same tree he scampered up to save said feline!) So if you’re looking for a superbly silly serving of slapstick superheroes, then Blue Beetle and Booster Gold are your one stop shop for folly, foolishness and fun.
This superlative series honestly cannot come more highly recommended, if you’re already a fan of the dysfunctional duo then you’re going to love seeing them back together once more, causing even more mayhem than whatever SuperVillain they might be punching in the noggin that week, and if you’re a newbie to their astonishingly absurd adventures, this is absolutely the best place to start , trust me, I guarantee you are gonna fall in love with everyone’s favourite screwball superheroes! Blue And Gold #1 Is Available From Your Local Comic-Book Emporium Right Now!
Welcome fellow agents of Precinct1313 to another episode of ‘The Week In Geek’ where we love to share our favourite – Comic book, Video-Game, and Cult Movie news for your perusal and pleasure. And so once more unto the geek dear agents, once more…
A Brooding Robin Captured On Camera…
“Holy live action awesomeness, Batman!” DC Comics and Warner Bros have finally revealed our first look at upcoming Titans actor Brenton Thwaites as iconic comic-book sidekick Robin, and it’s, quite frankly… fantastic!
The shadowy, brooding side shot of the Boy Wonder encapsulates perfectly the classic comic-book character, and even though it’s not a full body shot, the design clearly follows Robin’s signature look, from the red and green hued costume, to the recognisable “R” symbol on the left breast. The costume design is by industry veteran Laura Shannon, who has previously worked on Iron Man and DC’s incoming live action version of Black Lightning.
The Titans live action series is due to debut next year on DC’s upcoming digital streaming service.
Batman + Medieval Japan = Too Much Bloody Awesomeness For Mere Mortals (In Fact, I Think My Head May Just Explode From The Excitement Of It All)…
This, this is freakin’ amazing!… as if Gotham’s grim guardian, The Batman, isn’t already the coolest Superhero ever conceived, DC Comics and Warner Bros animation only go and throw him (plus his nearest and dearest foes, and allies) back in time to medieval Japan, where they become entangled in a provincial power struggle.
The film is directed by Jumpei Mizusaki, who expressed that the film is definitely more of reflection on how Japan sees Batman, as opposed to how Batman perceives Japan. Indulge in the sublime trailer included below fellow Batfans! (and do try not to let your head explode from the exhilaration, it really can cause quite a mess!)
The Triumphant Return Of Booster Gold Is Nigh (Finally!)…
The bombastic and much beloved Booster Gold will be returning to the DC Universe in Action Comics #993, courtesy of his original creator Dan Jurgens. Cult character Booster has been conspicuous by his absence for quite a while now, and his multiple fans have clamoured for his rapturous return.
Booster (real name – Michael Jon Carter) the self promoting, glory seeking, time travelling hero from the future first appeared in February 1986, created by writer/artist Dan Jurgens. Using his knowledge from future events and advanced technology he became a self styled Superhero with a love for fame and fortune.
Though initially a swaggering and attention seeking showboat, Booster over the course of time, via interactions with other costumed heroes and through personal tragedies finally became the candid and unwavering Superhero he always dreamed of becoming, though ultimately weighed downed by the false pretence of the previous reputation he created for himself. Oh, and he’s also one half of the greatest comedic comic-book duo of all time Blue and Gold (along with his ol’ pal Blue Beetle – Ted Kord)
Booster will return from the future once more in the two part tale “Booster Shot” in issues #933 and 934 of Action Comics ( we need a Blue and Gold movie… right now DC… right goddamn now!)
Why Not Join Us Again Next Time Friends For More Week In Geek.
Welcome fellow agents of Precinct1313 to another exhilarating episode of World’s Finest, the series that introduces you to some of our very favourite convocation of comic-book characters, of… all… time!
Each episode we cordially invite one of our most treasured Superheroes, Supervillains, Costumed Crimefighters, Dimension Dwelling Demons, and of course… Super-Pets (Ace the Bathound has been sniffing around for an interview recently it seems) to answer a quotient of quintessentially quirky questions about life, the universe and biscuits (’cause everyone loves biscuits)
And so let us welcome to Precinct1313’s sanguine sofa of sardonic satire, that banteringly bemused bastion of blustering bravado… Blue Beetle.
Precinct1313: Welcome to the Precinct Ted, it’s great to have you here.
Blue Beetle: Thanks so much, it actually took me a while to find it to be honest, I mean it resides “at the edge of existence” and my Sat-Nav doesn’t seem to have that particular setting.
Precinct1313: Yeah, sorry about that, I always find that if you bypass the Nth dimension and take the matter reality highway you tend to get here much quicker.
Blue Beetle: Are you for real?
Precinct1313: ‘Fraid so, anyhow as I said it’s fantastic that you could stop by, I have been a personal huge fan of yours since the 80’s, especially your co-starring role in Justice League International.
Blue Beetle: Why thank you, I… wait a minute, co-starring!?
Precinct1313: Uh, yes… I mean there were a lot of other heroes involved, including The Batman.
Blue Beetle: Hmmmph! well to refute that, I happen to have on me an old photo of the League from back then clearly showing me front and centre, here…
Precinct1313: You just ‘happened’ to have that old photo on you… hey wait did you have this laminated!?
Blue Beetle: Yeah, so?
Precinct1313: Riiiight! anyway onto our first question, and this one was actually sent in by your old Super-Foes, The Madmen, they ask, why are you such a douchebag?
Blue Beetle: I’m not, they are.
Precinct1313: Uuuum, did you want to expand on that at all?
Blue Beetle: Nope!
Precinct1313: OK, well this is going swimmingly then.
Precinct1313: Now, you’re actually the second person to take on the mantle of Blue Beetle after the unfortunate death of original BB Dan Garrett, and it was his dying wish that you took over, a huge responsibility I’m sure.
Blue Beetle: Yes, it is. Daniel was a great man, a true hero, and as braggish as I am, he’s left one hell of a reputation for me to follow in. I’m not sure I can ever do him real justice, but I do try.
Precinct1313: You do just fine Ted, now it was during your time in Justice League that you met your BFF, Booster Gold correct?
Blue Beetle: Yes indeedy, ol’ Booster and I are inseparable, you know like Batman and Robin (he’s Robin, by the way) or Butch and Sundance…
Precinct1313: Laurel and Hardy??
Blue Beetle: Hmmmpph! no.
Precinct1313: Well you guys do have reputation for buffoonery right?
Blue Beetle: I prefer to call it playful exuberance.
Precinct1313: You were originally created by one of the comic-book medium’s true aristocracy, the great Steve Ditko, I mean, just wow!
Blue Beetle: Ooooh, oooh, the fourth wall thing, Starfire told me all about this, it sounds like fun. Yes I did indeed originate from that great man, it is a distinct honour to have such a distinguished creator.
Precinct1313: I bet, well we seem to be running out of time, so I would once more like to thank you for joining us this evening, any last words?
Blue Beetle: Just remember kids, stay out of trouble, crime is bad… and I’m definitely way cooler than The Batman… OK?
Precinct1313: Sigh… yes, OK.
In our next episode we shall be joined by Etta Candy, best friend of the awesome Amazon Wonder Woman, World War II freedom fighter, and leader of the Beta Lambda Sorority – “Holiday Girls”. Until Then.
Welcome fellow agents of Precinct1313 to another episode of ‘The Week In Geek’ where we love to share our favourite Comic Book, Video-Game and Cult Movie news for your perusal and pleasure.
NES Mini Launches, And Instantly Sells Out…
Nintendo’s classic grey box made a comeback this week with the release of the NES Classic Edition, a cute mini version of their hit 80’s home games console, replete with 30 built in games and a reproduction of the original controller… and instantly sold out worldwide!
Demand has been extremely high for the retro beast and Nintendo manufacturers are currently producing more as we write this post, though for some fans the wait might be too long, as the titchy console (which retails for £50 here in the UK) has been selling for ridiculous amounts on E-Bay, with people paying 4 to 5 times the RRP. Luckily us Precinct1313 dwellers are SEGA fans, and already have our mini Megadrive (known as the Genesis in the US) console… which actually comes with 80 games built in!
We Can ‘Harley’ Wait For Ms Quinn’s Solo Movie…
The Clown Princess of Crime, Harley Quinn, was a huge hit this year at the box office as an integral part of DC’s ridiculously fun Suicide Squad movie, in fact Margot Robbie’s performance was so highly rated that DC and Warner Bros almost instantly announced her own solo movie would be coming ‘at some point.’
Well technically not solo, as DC are lining up a veritable cadre of female comic book characters to star alongside the Mischievous Minx of Mayhem, as we reported some time back, possibly including such luminary legends as Batgirl, Black Canary and Poison Ivy. To help cement the fact that the movie will hopefully begin production soon, it’s been announced that scripting duties have been given to Christina Hodson. Hodson is known for her highly sought after screenplays that include soon to be filming, female led Sci-Fi actioner ‘The Eden Project’ and psychological thriller ‘Shut In’.
(Update: It’s now been confirmed by Suicide Squad director David Ayer that the scripting will be undertaken by Geneva Dworet-Robertson, and the movie will also star Catwoman and Poison Ivy, better known together as the ‘Gotham City Sirens’.)
Justice League Of America’s Full Line-Up Is An Eclectic Enigma…
Not since the halcyon heroes of the 1980’s JLI has a roster for the world’s greatest Super-Team been so… damn cool! Justice League International has always been my favourite version of DC Comics’ beloved team of MetaHumans.
I much preferred the quirky line up of characters, Blue Beetle (the Ted Kord variant, not the current version) and Booster Gold were standouts in the team… essentially they were lovable Superhero screw ups, C-list at best, to begin with, but advanced through those ranks to A listers in a very short amount of time indeed, thanks to great writing, fantastic character arcs, and an endearing slapstick style humour.
The new JLA line up includes some classic heroes you expect to be included, such as The Batman and Black Canary, but then throws caution to the wind with lesser knowns like The Ray and former villain Killer Frost! Definitely the most intriguing and exciting addition is ‘The Main Man’ himself, Lobo, back to his original arse-kicking alien bounty hunter self, after ditching the (rather terrible) New 52 version. Justice League of America Rebirth will be available in February 2017, brought to you by those ceaseless creators of cosmic comic book craft; Steve Orlando and Ivan Reis.
