Precinct1313’s Comic-Book Classics: Odyssey Of The Amazons

In 2017 Author, Kevin Grevioux brought over his love for strong female characters to a new mini-series for DC Comics with “Odyssey Of The Amazons”. Grevioux is probably best known as the co-creator of the smash hit “Underworld” series of movies, the Kate Beckinsale led film franchise that dealt with the ongoing, millennia spanning conflict between Vampire and Lycan (werewolf) clans

This collected volume encompasses the original six issue mini-series and is set many years before the birth of Princess Diana, and follows a host of Amazons as they set out on an expedition to re-discover their bygone Amazon sisters, along the way they encounter mythical beasts and legendary creatures, though their campaign soon graduates into a rescue mission as two of their sisters are captured by Norse Storm Giants.

Odyssey kicks off a previously untold chapter in Amazon lore as we follow the group of Amazon warriors and their indomitable leader Hessia, as they scour the world outside of Themyscira on a quest for more of their kind. Feeling very much in the mould of an epic tale of Greek antiquity such as Jason and the Argonauts, Grevioux’s mythical fable is fantastically well rendered and is an enthralling and welcome addition to Amazon mythos.

The series is in essenceΒ an Amazon origin story, exploring their existence and beginnings. Though the Amazons themselves are primarily a race derived from ancient Greece, they are also a diverse group comprising many ethnicities, and Odyssey aims to explain their eventual formation as the immortal female race of warriors, artisans, and scholars we all know and love.

Our first encounter with the Amazon emissaries is in battle, as they face off against an invading troop of O’Kungians in the fictional African country Zhu’Kara. It’s here that we first meet the group’s stalwart leader Hessia, a strong confident character revered by her Amazon peers, tasked by Queen Hippolyta with gathering Amazons from different cultures and nations, and returning with them to Themyscira. The visuals by Ryan Benjamin are gorgeous, beautifully detailed, they especially shine during the hectic battle sequences, where his kinetic art flows wonderfully.

Odyssey Of The Amazons is an engaging and exhilaratingΒ  take on Amazon history by Grievoux, strong characterisation, an awesome central character in Hessia and sublime artwork by Benjamin. Highly recommended.

  1. Cool, I just ordered this πŸ™‚ Seems an interesting addition to Amazon lore, and by the Underworld series co-creator too! Great images and cover. The style reminds me a wee bit of the comic adaptation of the ‘Clash of the Titans’ 1981 film – the graphics, plus seeing an owl!

    • Awesome! you will love it my friend. It really does evoke a Clash of the Titans/ Jason and the Argonauts vibe, and the interior artwork is really rather lovely indeed. I’m a huge fan of Kate Beckinsale and the Underworld series, and Grevioux is a fantastic writer, so we’ll hopefully see lots more comic-book goodness from him in the future. πŸ™‚

  2. That’s quite the cover! I actually just read Wonder Woman and Justice League Dark: The Witching Hour and the Batman Contagion storyline right before that. It felt the appropriate reading choice what with the pandemic and all. πŸ˜‰
I’ve been on a DC binge since I just signed up for the DC Universe streaming service. I love how they have so many comics available on there, but I’m bummed because I just found out apparently they’re going to discontinue the entire streaming service so it’s like I have all this content at my fingertips now and I guess July 3rd is when they’re supposedly shutting it all down? On a good note, we got to watch the second season of the Harley Quinn animated series they have on there so that was fun. πŸ™‚ Do you use that service? I’ve only been on it for 2 days but I wish I’d signed up for it a lot sooner so I could have read a lot more of the comics at least.

    • Hey there my friend, yeah that cover and actually all the artwork throughout is fantabulous! I’ve read Batman: Contagion (Mmmm, thinking I may have also reviewed it at some point, sooooo many posts! ;)) Haven’t read WW/Dark Witching Hour yet, but I believe I did pick up the first issue when it came out.

Unfortunately the DCU streaming service has never been available in the UK disappointingly enough, I’ve ended up buying series like Titans and Doom Patrol (which are both awesome!) on Blu-Ray. Shame it’s coming to an end, though I believe all the series such as Titans and Harley are being ported over to HBO for their continuation (along with the Snyder Cut of Justice League!! can’t wait for that one!) Hope you and yours are well my friend. πŸ™‚

      • Nice! I love when the art is fantastic beyond just the cover and is great quality panel to panel. πŸ™‚
That’s too bad the streaming service never was made available in the UK but at least like you said, a lot of the content is moving elsewhere. πŸ™‚ We really want to check out Doom Patrol (and Titans if we can squeeze in the time) so it’s great to know you said they’re so good! πŸ˜€
And we’re doing well, thanks. I hope the same for you and yours! ^_^ This year has been quite the roller coaster, that’s for sure.

      • Yeah, we’re all good thanks πŸ™‚ I do highly recommend both Doom Patrol and Titans (in fact Doom Patrol get first introduced in season one of Titans) both shows are leagues above the similar CW variants, with much better effects and stunt work… and live action Starfire and Raven are really rather fantastic! πŸ™‚

      • That’s awesome! πŸ™‚ Should we watch Titans first in that case, or does it not really matter which one you watch first?

      • I think it would help continuity wise to watch the first season of Titans, that said, you could go straight to Doom Patrol and be fine. Though as I mentioned I really do recommend Titans, one of the very best Superhero TV shows I have ever seen! (though I could be regarded as somewhat bias, lol.) πŸ™‚

      • Nice! We did start watching Titans and so far we’re liking it. πŸ™‚ Fortunately, I read something that said it was just something called DC Daily that is ON DC Universe that is canceled and not the streaming service as a whole so it looks like I’ll have plenty more time to catch up on DC Comics of the past, and binge-watch the shows they have available.

      • Yay, that’s good news about it not cancelling! Hopefully they’ll bring it over to the UK soon. Glad you’re enjoying Titans, really enjoyed Season One, and Season Two so far is fantastic (Deathstroke makes his debut and Wonder Girl!!)

      • That’s awesome! I hope they make it available for you guys as well. I think you’d really enjoy it! πŸ™‚
