It’s A Bird, It’s A Plane… It’s Eighty Years Of Superman!
We don’t tend to write a great deal about Kal-El here in the Precinct’s comic crypts, it’s not that we’re aren’t fans of the Kryptonian visitor, we are, but our love for DC’s other big two (Bats and Wondy… natch!) eclipses our admiration for the Man of Steel… yet, we admire the otherworldly hero enough to often include him whenever something major happens… and this is, most assuredly, one of those times.
2018 will definitively be the year of the Superman, as Clark Kent gets set to celebrate his 80th anniversary since creation! That’s right fellow fans of fantastic fiction, eighty years of the big blue boy scout thwarting crime, foiling nemesis Lex Luthor, saving cats out of trees, and feuding with the Batman… Supes has been doing all this and more for an astonishing eight decades and DC intend to show him the reverence he absolutely deserves since his groundbreaking debut in Action Comics #1 in 1938.
But wait, not only does 2018 mark eighty years of the red-caped crusader but also that of Action Comics itself, which is additionally celebrating an astonishing 1,000 issues! which in and of itself is a first for Superhero comics.
Action Comics #1000 comprises eight different comic covers in celebration of this remarkable achievement by a number of acclaimed artists including astounding talents such as Jim Lee, Dave Gibbons, Jim Steranko, and Dan Jurgens.
Action Comics #1000 is releasing as an 80 page prestige format comic that will feature a variety of tales brought to you by some of comicdom’s most celebrated creators, sensational scribes such as – Tom King, Grant Morrison, Tim Sale, Richard Donner (yes indeed, the director of Christopher Reeves’ awesome cinematic Superman debut) and Brian Michael Bendis. In fact speaking of Bendis, this will mark his inauguration as a DC contributor since his dramatic defection from Marvel Comics, with Bendis then taking the reins of both Action Comics and Superman for the foreseeable future this coming July.
Also, alongside Action #1000, DC are releasing a hardcover collection titled ‘Action Comics: 80 Years Of Superman‘ which will feature a variety of classic Superman reprints from yesteryear, a large comic cover image gallery, essays by writers and comic historians, and, most interestingly, a never before published story by Supe’s creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster!
Action Comics #1000 and the 80 Years Of Superman hardcover will be released at your local comic book emporium on April 18. So don your red cape and trunks (that’s right folks, Supe’s classic outer/underwear also marks it’s dramatic return!!) and soar on down to your comic-shop and tell them Precinct1313 sent you!

I’ll definitely buy this! Been reading the John Byrne run on Superman and collecting them. I’ve recently jumped head first back into comics and I’m broke as f**k! I am greatly enjoying myself, however!

Ah yes indeed my friend I also know the pleasure and pain of collecting comics and general geekery, but as you said… I may be broke but as far as comics and geeky shit are concerned – I’m a millionaire!! 🙂

Thanks my friend, and yes indeed eighty years is a massive run, as far as comic book characters are concerned only The Phantom is older at 82 years, and they both look bloody fantastic for octogenarians!!

That it is my friend, Superheroes do tend to age well, don’t they? I’m sure when I reach the grand old age of 80, I shall probably be creaking around dissing the younger generation for their bad taste in music and comics, not foiling the plans of a SuperVillain… ho-hum the life of the non-superheroic. 🙂

Wow 80 years!! I still have very fond memories of wearing a cape my mum made for me to school every day and I even slept in the thing. I had superman blankets, curtains, toys, lunchbox and even a superman watch haha

Hey there, thanks for visiting the Precinct and sharing a very cool memory with us. I have a similar experience from when I was younger except with Batman stuff! 🙂 Have a great day.
