Classic Wonder Woman: Sensation Comics #1
As you probably have realised by now if you have been a regular visitor to this site, the amazing Amazon, Wonder Woman is Precinct1313’s all-time favourite comic book character, and with her 75th anniversary gradually looming on the horizon (December 2016, fact fans) we thought it was time to do a classic covers weekly countdown to the birthday of comics’ most important female character.
Wonder Woman’s first ever appearance was in the anthology series, All Star Comics#8, primarily the comic featured the adventures of the world’s first Superhero team, Justice Society of America, though also it also carried stories of other notable 40’s heroes including, the Atom, original version of Sandman and the Flash amongst many others. In December of 1941, All Star presented the world with arguably their biggest ever creation, Diana of Themyscira, daughter of Queen Hippolyta and the Greek Gods themselves, born of clay and given life by a pantheon of the Gods, Demeter, Athena, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hermes and Hestia, with each bestowing upon her a powerful gift – strength, beauty, wisdom, speed, agility, and the ability to commune with the animals.
In January of 1942, Wonder Woman was made the lead character in the newly launched anthology – Sensation Comics, which also featured her first ever cover appearance, in June of the same year she was given her very own comic … but that is a story for another time…
Join us again in a weeks time for another classic WW cover, my awesome Amazonian associates.
