A Sad Week For Gamers And Geeks Everywhere…

DF 1

This week has been a heartbreaking one for gamers and geekdom alike as two luminaries of this popular past time were taken from the world. First and most importantly is the sad  passing of web animator, screenwriter and voice actor Monty Oum on February 1st. I first discovered Monty’s superlative work on the video-game, mash up web series, Dead Fantasy. Monty took two beloved video-game series, one on one beat-em-up, Dead or Alive and turn based RPG, Final Fantasy and utilising close approximations of the in-game characters delivered a CG movie series of Battle-Royale type fights between the various characters of the respective universes.

Monty was employed by Rooster Teeth and was also known for his work on the popular Red vs Blue franchise of animated comedy episodes starring the opposing forces of red and blue Spartans from video game heavy hitter Halo. Monty fell into a coma in January and passed away on February the 1st, our thoughts go out to his family at this time.

Joystiq Ends!

And on a lesser note, but still a loss to gaming communities as a whole is the closing of the virtual doors of the greatest video-game news and reviews website ever … Joystiq, after close to ten years of impartial reporting on gaming and general geekery. Joystiq was a bastion of non-discriminatory and unbiased reporting and had been an everyday constant in my life since it’s inception all those years ago. Not only were the reviews fair and concise, but the staff as a whole had a grudging respect for it’s readership, something that cannot be said for a lot of the other larger video-game review sites.

But what really made Joystiq the place it was and why I returned on a daily basis, was it’s community, an intelligent, insightful and accepting group of like minded individuals who came together to discuss and share their love for a mutual hobby. In a world where most gaming communities could (and quite often are) home to bitter fan-boy rivalry, toxicity and racist and sexist individuals, Joystiq was at large free of such ‘trolls’, a place where most people got along and were respectful of differing opinions, as a member of this community for many years … I am really going to miss my day to day interactions on this site. So long Joystiq, best wishes for the future to all the staff therein.

  2. Too many young talented people seem to be dropping like flies left right and center these day’s and it’s a rotten shame.
I also hope you read my award nom blog my friend, as I only know how to write from my heart so please accept the sincere compliments I left for you. And while I am here, you are one of the very few who calls me Sassy (LMG also does.) which makes my day! I believe in using names as its important. So do I use your Arcane name?
I get to go home for a day or two on March 4th so I am hoping you can identify that doll I have.
And Stonehenge!! The only place I didn’t get to see while in Scotland. It must have been amazing to have grown up in that area!
Didn’t intend to write such a long comment..lol
Hope you are having a fantasic day! 🙂

    • Hi Sassy, I seem to be having trouble getting comments to show on your site since this morning. I replied to your last comment that you made, but the couple of times I sent them they didn’t appear, yet they are appearing on other sites I make comments on. So I’m hoping you see this reply on my site. My name is Bruce by the way 🙂

      • Good morning Bruce! 🙂
Yes, the last comment I wrote you wouldn’t go through. It eventually did but I had to post it further up the comment thread. It’s there but I doubt you’d have seen it. I will have to check how things are running this morning. Another weird problem is my new theme should be black and red however my old one shows up sometimes. I am a pretty smart person but all things wordpress irritate me as support rarely ever get back to me. So I will have to see whats going on while I have my morning coffee.
Hope Salem and you are having a great day. 🙂

      • Hi there, I just noticed it wasn’t posting even though I had commented on another site which worked, rather odd but glitches happen I guess. Hope you are well my friend, you too have an excellent day! 🙂

      • Yes, yesterday was hella glitchy from the word go. One quick question, what do you see on your end? The black artistic theme I have or my old one?
I “think” I am well thus far. Still have one more cup of coffee to drink to wake my brain up.😄
Which darn I’d rather be drinking a good ole proper cup of english tea.. 😉

      • It’s the black theme I can see, and yes indeed, things can get a little glitchy sometimes but overall it’s definitely one of the more stable platforms out there. 🙂

      • Okay good. Thank you!
And you are quite correct. WordPress does have a lot going for it. 🙂 🙂

      • Okay I think I found out what happened. I was receiving a lot of views or hits (as I call them) more than I normally would and it was overloading my blog interrupting our conversation. Gee, maybe I’m not as dumb as I think when it comes to wordpress! 😄
Really glad to see that you did find my last comment to you.
Feel free to catch up to me laters if you like. 🙂

  3. Call me Bruce, Sassy, I changed my first name to that about 20 years ago because of my Batman infatuation! 🙂 Yes indeed, Stonehenge is amazing, it’s situated very close to my home town of Warminster, Wiltshire in the UK, though I live in the south-west of the country now, I now live around only 15 miles away from the fabled home of the hound of the Baskervilles! Do take the photos of the figure, I’m intrigued as to what it could be. You also have a most excellent day 🙂
