Precinct1313’s all time favourite comic-book characters..daily countdown.
Day 4 of our countdown continues with…
NUMBER 12 is: The Crow.
‘Suddenly I heard a tapping, as if someone gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door’
The Crow was created by writer/illustrator James O’Barr in 1989 in direct response to the unfortunate death of his fiancee at the hands of a drunk driver. The comic is reflective of this event by having the main character named Eric Draven and his fiancee Shelly, being attacked after their car breaks down. Eric is shot in the head and lays paralysed and dying whilst Shelly gets assaulted and then murdered. He is then mysteriously resurrected by a crow to hunt down and kill his murderers before returning to his grave once more. The Crow throughout all of this acts as Eric’s guide, helping him to track down the perpetrators one by one to sate his vengeance.
In 1994, the film version of the Crow appeared at the cinema directed by Alex Proyas and starring the late Brandon Lee (son of martial artist Bruce Lee), it was a fantastic portrayal by Brandon of the Eric Draven character. It is a dark and emotional movie due to it’s original source material and the fact that it was Brandon’s last movie as he died on set after being accidentally shot during filming. A terrible loss which adds even more emotional weight to the movie..though it had several sequels, only the first movie was good and it comes highly recommended.
